How do Herbalists treat Hypertension?

The hour long consultation will be utilised to ascertain both the extent and cause of hypertension. Importantly a herbalist will ascertain that high blood pressure is not a symptom of another disorder e.g. Kidney disease.

There are five key approaches to treating hypertension

  1. Reduce fluid volume
  2. Relax blood vessels
  3. Open peripheral circulation
  4. Use of cardiac tonics
  5. Use of ‘Nervines’ a specific category of herbs which act on the nervous system to help cope with stress.

The approach, (or combination of approaches) and specific herbs chosen will be determined by the needs of the individual patient.

I was not sleeping well and felt under pressure all the time and this had lead to an increase in my blood pressure. I went to my doctor who said they would conduct 3 separate blood pressure tests and, if it remained at this level, medication would be necessary. At this point I contacted Mandy who conducted a thorough investigation. After this she gave me a herbal medication which, since starting it, has made my sleep pattern better than it has been for years. I also find myself far calmer, regardless of the issues that present themselves and, above all, my blood pressure is now back at normal levels. I am very pleased that I have not had to go down the route of chemical medication. I am using nature to keep me in good health. I found Mandy to be very professional and would highly recommend her.

Can Herbal Medicine be used alongside conventional medicine?

The short answer is yes. Many of my patients are taking medicine prescribed both by their GP and myself. However for safety reasons herbal medicine should only be used in a complementary manner under the direction of a qualified practitioner.
